The Great Big Dance Off

What a wonderful experience for all of our dancers on Tuesday!

Westwood Dance Club had qualified for the regional heats of the Great Big Dance Off at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon and wowed the crowd with their incredible performance, makeup and costume. Taking to the stage everyone gave their absolute best and made us all so proud.
Such a HUGE well done from us all and a big thank you to the parents for their help and to Karen for, once again, giving our children an experience to remember for the rest of their lives. Here are photos and a video of the dress rehearsal and we are also in this week’s Wiltshire Times, online here: http://www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk/news/14332708.Westford_with_Iford_School_narrowly_miss_out_on_national_dance_tournament/?ref=rss

The Great Big Dance Off Final!

Today I feel a very proud head teacher, as I do every day, but yesterday I had the pleasure of watching our superb dancers in Orchid class take part in the Great Big Dance Off Final at the New Theatre in Oxford. After an enormous amount of hard work to get through the heats in Swindon and then training very hard to perfect their moves, timing and skill, every single dancer deserved their place on the stage yesterday.

Up against 24 other schools from around the country and the second smallest school in the competition, this really has quite literally put our school on the map, as you can see below in the programme!:

The level of energy, enthusiasm and commitment from everyone was just wonderful and despite being the second smallest, our school had the biggest cheer and warmest reception when announced in the early part of the second half. With perfect timing, slick moves and an outstanding performance, every member of the dance group should feel so proud of themselves and I hope that it is an experience that they will all remember for many years to come . I know I will as the atmosphere was electric!

I must give an enormous amount of thanks, once again, to Karen Hobson for her tireless efforts, amazing choreography and superb organisation in making sure that the day was one for us all to remember. What started out as a simple discussion between us, Karen was able to develop into a reality and a wonderful experience for us all and I know how much time has been put into making this such a success. Can I also please thank the parents for their support and time in ensuring that this was so successful. I am in no doubt that you are all incredibly proud of your children and rightly so.

Westwood with Iford School. Great Big Dance Off Finalists 2014

What a week so far!

It really has been…On Monday we had our very first Mother’s Monday and it was so lovely to see so many mums and grandmas join us for the day. Assembly was packed and I really enjoyed sharing a special Mother’s day story with everyone. Then it was off to the classrooms for everyone to take part in  the learning on offer and enjoy being back in school again! It was great to walk around school and see everyone so involved. I had the pleasure of being on duty on Monday too and seeing mums running around our field, playing football and joining in the fun was exactly what the day was all about. Some mums even stayed for lunch and then in the afternoon more of our mums and grandmas came to school, so by the end of the day I feel that we had all enjoyed a very special day.

But there’s so much more… on Monday afternoon our supserstar dancers all set off on the coach to the Wyvern theatre in Swindon where they had made it to the regional heats of the Great Big Dance Off. With 600 audience members and a big stage to fill, everyone danced superbly, with rocking rhythm, tight timing and excellent expression and enjoyment. I can honestly say that I am immensely proud of everyone who took part and they should all feel that they represented the school in such a brilliant way.

Then…on Monday night, when I found out, I was so  pleased for Orchid Class, whose performance of POWER and top 6 finish has danced them into the FINAL in Oxford in June. What an amazing achievement for us as a school when up against other, bigger schools. This really will put Westwood school on the map and will be an experience that we can all enjoy sharing with the children as they get closer to the big day. Well done everyone!!

I must say an enormous thank you to Karen Hobson whose incredible efforts to teach the dancers, organise costumes, enter the dances and prepare the children for an experience of a lifetime was just spectacular.

Just a small reminder that I am hosting Tea with the Head after school on Friday. The usual home made cake, tea, coffee and biscuits will be on offer, along with informal chat and a fun way to end the term.  You are all very welcome to join me to round off the term.
